Brand Names

Brand Names under Ceylon Chocolates Ltd.

The production of chocolates commenced in 1965. Management invited suggestions from the public through a press advertisement to find a brand name for its products, but nothing was acceptable to the Board. Hence it was decided to form the brand name by adding first letters of the first names of the Board members.
"KAN"- from the word Kandy, since the origin of the company is Kandy.
"DO"- from the first name of the Managing Director – Dodwill.
"S"- being the first letter of the Chairman's name Sarath Wijesinghe.

Thus the brand name which later revolutionized the chocolate market in the South Asian region, the "Kandos" was born. In 1965 full production of "Kandos" chocolates was started. The then existing market leaders in the chocolates industry were gradually pushed away from the market, thus gaining the market leadership. In 1970, with the demise of the Chairman, Mr. Sarath Wijesinghe, Mr. Philip Upali Wijewardane, who had then created a revolution in the local and the international business scene through his very efficient and flourishing business enterprises took over the full control of Ceylon Chocolates Ltd. With the expansion of his business into the international boundaries, "Kandos" became a very popular brand in the world over. By this time, "Delta" confectionery products were being manufactured by Ceylon Sugar Company - formerly Rajaram Confectionery Company Ltd., yet another business venture that was acquired by Mr. Upali Wijewardene in 1962. The production of "Delta" brand confectionery items were transferred to Ceylon Chocolates Ltd., in 1970. Upali Trading Company Ltd., which was established for the purpose of distributing and marketing the products of Upali Group of Companies throughout the country became the trading arm of Ceylon Chocolates Ltd. Subsequently the distribution operations handled by Upali Trading Company Ltd., was vested in Upali Food & Beverages (Pvt) Ltd. in July, 1997, and today this Company functions as the trading arm of Ceylon Chocolates Ltd.

Today Ceylon Chocolates Ltd. produces Chocolates and other confectionery products under the brand names of Kandos, K Super, Newgen, Delta and Pixie.
